THE CEMENTARY OF YUNGAY, ANCASH

The cementary of Yungay, located in the Áncash region, approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes from the capital of Huaraz, is a place filled with history and memory. This cemetery stands as a testament to a town that was buried by the tragedy of the 1970 earthquake and avalanche. However, beyond the devastation, Yungay is a clear example of resilience—a town that was reborn, finding the strength to believe in its future and development once again.

The tour of this iconic site lasts approximately one hour, during which you can learn about the city’s process of reconstruction and rebirth. Additionally, the site features a museum where videos and guided tours offer a deeper understanding of Yungay’s history and the struggle of its people to move forward.

Ahuac Lagoon, Huaraz

Pictures taken inLaguna Ahuac is located at an altitude of approximately 4,200 meters above sea level, about 16 kilometers from the city of Huaraz, in the Áncash region. To get there, you first take a colectivo (shared van) from the city of Huaraz to Willcahuaín, a 40-minute drive. From Willcahuaín, the hike to the lagoon begins, which can take anywhere from 1 to 4 hours, depending on your pace. If you walk quickly, you can reach the lagoon in 1 to 2 hours at most, although the path is rocky and somewhat demanding.

It is recommended to bring plenty of water, as the hike can be challenging. Once you arrive at the lagoon, you’ll be rewarded with an amazing view and crystal-clear water that mirrors the beautiful surroundings. Be prepared, though, because the water is quite cold, adding a refreshing touch to the experience. It’s definitely a must-visit for nature lovers and those who enjoy high-altitude hikes.
